PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK
Shannon Sullivan, Flintridge Prep--Sullivan, a 6-foot senior outside hitter, led Flintridge Prep to its first Prep League championship in girls’ volleyball and was named the league’s player of the year. The four-year varsity standout had 19 kills as Flintridge Prep defeated Ramona Convent in the second round of the Southern Section 1-A playoffs. “Shannon has played club ball for several years and she knows how to play the game,” said Rebel Coach Lisa Burton, who had guided her team to a 19-1 record through last week.
COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK
Jose Garcia, Occidental--Garcia, a junior cross-country runner, finished first overall and helped the Occidental men’s team win the NCAA Division III West Regional last weekend at the Rancho Santa Fe Polo Club near San Diego. Garcia won the race in 25 minutes 30 seconds. The Occidental men’s team will compete in the Division III nationals this weekend at Newport News, Va. Becky Kopchik, who won the women’s race at the regional, and Arcelia Gomez, who placed third, also qualified for nationals.

Brett Miller--Miller, a former offensive lineman at Glendale College, is in his second season with the New York Jets. The 6-5, 292-pound Miller rotates at tackle with Irv Eatman.
