A Bubbly Time With ‘Soapdish’

Here’s a look at new releases you’ll find in the video store this weekend:
Recent Movies: “Soapdish” (Paramount, no list price, PG-13) is a satire on the people who make soap operas that will appeal most to people who like so-so sitcoms. This bubbly but thin bar of comedy stars Sally Field as a soap queen and Cathy Moriarty as a colleague trying to make her slip from her throne. Everyone (including Kevin Kline as a vain actor) overplays to the hilt except for Whoopi Goldberg, who (as the show’s head writer) provides some calmness amid the silly storm.
“Only the Lonely” (Fox, $92.98, PG-13) stars John Candy in an uneven but likable comedy/drama about a Chicago policeman trying to break away from his domineering mother (Maureen O’Hara, in her first movie role in 18 years) to win the love of a young woman (Ally Sheedy).
Vintage Video: “Closely Watched Trains” (Fox Lorber, $79.95). A Czechoslovakian film about a young man’s attempts to end his virginity and destroy a Nazi train, it earned the best foreign film Oscar in 1967.
Coming Attractions: “City Slickers” (Wednesday), “Terminator 2” (Dec. 11), “Doc Hollywood” (Dec. 18), “The Naked Gun 2 1/2” (Dec. 19), “Thelma & Louise” and “Dying Young” (Jan. 8), “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey” (Jan. 9), “Jungle Fever” and “Point Break” (Jan. 16), “Life Stinks” (Jan. 29), “Mobsters” (Jan. 30) and “Regarding Henry” (Feb. 6).
