Wounds From Nigerian Civil War Begin to Heal

LAGOS, Nigeria — Lingering wounds of Nigeria’s bloody civil war were finally healed Friday when its opposing leaders, Yakubu Gowon and Emeka Ojukwu, shook hands for the first time in 25 years at a gathering to help African children.
“You only shake hands when you are friends. This is a big moment for Nigeria,” Defense Minister Sani Abacha said after the two former generals walked together through crowds of cheering people shouting “Long Live Nigeria!”
