Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore registered a hollow victory as the sole candidate in presidential elections that were marred by opposition protests and a low turnout. Opposition supporters wrecked polling stations in Bobo Dioulasso, the West African country’s second city, and police dispersed protesters in the northern city of Ouahigouya, state radio reported. A boycott call by a coalition of main opposition parties was widely heeded, and reports said that less than half of the 3.5 million electorate turned out to vote.
