Conservative commentator Patrick J. Buchanan said that, as President, he would be willing to shut down the government from November to January to force Congress to stop wasting money. In an interview on ABC-TV’s “This Week With David Brinkley,” Buchanan said Bush and Congress “double-crossed the American people” and drove the economy “into the dumpster” when they raised taxes last year. Buchanan, a communications director for President Ronald Reagan, is expected to announce that he will run against Bush in the New Hampshire primary.
