Rain shortened the National Hardcourt Tennis Championships at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club for the first time in the 43-year history of the event.
The women’s 40 singles and doubles championships were decided early in the day, but rain called off the father/son and 40 mixed doubles divisions.
Fourth-seeded Karen Gallagher (Vail, Colo.) defeated unseeded Carol Ford (Potomac, Md.), 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 to take the women’s 40 singles title. The second-seeded team of Stephanie Adcock (Los Gatos) and Carol Baily (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) beat fourth-seeded Debbie McCormick (Huntington Beach) and Betty Ann Dent (Newport Beach), 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3).
Tournament director Bill Kellogg named the father/son teams of Dick and Jonathon Leach (Laguna Beach) and Scott Sr. and Scott Jr. Estes (Chatham, N.J.) co-champions because neither team was able to reschedule the match.
However, Kellogg said the 40 mixed doubles finals between Rosie Casals (Sausalito) and Geoff Grant (Durham, N.C.) and Dave Bohannon (Garden Grove) and McCormick will be rescheduled for sometime in January.
