Despite fielding a young team, Bauer says the Tartans will be strong enough to successfully defend the Academy League championship they shared with Liberty Christian. “This is the most athletic team I’ve had,” the third-year coach said. “We’ll make mistakes but this is a very intelligent team that will rebound from those mistakes.” Bauer said the team’s tough nonleague schedule, including games against Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach, defending Southern Section Division V-A champion Ribet Academy and Needles (32-1 last year) will help it mature. Mruthyunjaya, who averaged 10.3 points last season, was the second-best three-point shooter in the county at 56.1% (32 of 57) and probably will do most of the scoring along with newcomer Raibon. The freshman has impressed Bauer so much that Raibon has been penciled in at starting forward. “He may be the best athlete we’ve had in the school since Ryan Westendorf,” Bauer said. Westendorf was one of the top scorers in the county last year with a 28-point average and led the county in rebounding with 16 per game. Bauer, however, will spread the scoring around. “I see five guys getting 10 or 12 points each per game,” he said.
