The $6-million Grand Slam Cup begins today at Munich without Stefan Edberg, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and, perhaps, Boris Becker.
Edberg, the top-ranked player in the world and the U.S. Open champion, has tendinitis and has not played since a loss to Michael Chang in the Paris Open. Sampras failed to qualify. Agassi decided not to play. Becker is doubtful because of a stomach virus.
The tournament winner gets $2 million.
Today, Chang plays Jim Courier; Jimmy Connors plays Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland; Cristiano Caratti of Italy plays Ivan Lendl and Thierry Champion of France plays Patrick McEnroe.
