Many of the coaches say the league race will boil down to Estancia’s two games with Trabuco Hills (Jan. 22 and Feb. 12), when Fuerbringer and Trabuco Hills’ 6-foot-10 Gavin Vanderputten square off. Fuerbringer, the league’s MVP and an all-Southern Section selection, is the the only Estancia player back from last season’s State Division III championship team. The Eagles lost 16 varsity players to graduation, but O’Brien didn’t have to look far for replacements. He promoted most of his players from last season’s 19-3 junior varsity team. “At most other schools, those junior varsity players would have been on the varsity last season,” Century Coach Greg Coombs said. Fuerbringer will get some help up front from Byrne, Faulkner and Schisler. Fuerbringer averaged 16.2 points and nine rebounds and shot 64% from the field last season. A good leaper with long arms, he’s looking to become a more complete player this season by improving his shooting range and becoming a better rebounder. Estancia lost some of its quickness and outside shooting with the graduation of starters Paul McDaniels and Mike Haas, but the Eagles have made up for it with size on the front line. “We have some good size and depth up front,” O’Brien said.
