WESTMINSTER — A 26-year-old Westminster man died Sunday of a gunshot wound to the head, a day after police found him slumped over the wheel of his car.
Alberto Quinones died at 3:30 a.m. at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he had been in critical condition since Saturday, police said.
Sgt. Tom Broderson said officers discovered Quinones inside his car just before 1 a.m. Saturday after the vehicle crashed into a tree.
Neighborhood residents had summoned police to the scene of the crash near 21st and Pine streets.
Broderson said the officers initially attributed Quinones’ severe head injuries to the traffic accident.
However, after the victim was taken to the hospital, doctors discovered that he had suffered a bullet wound to the head, Broderson said.
“We think what caused him to crash was his being shot,” Broderson said. “But whether he was shot in the car or out of the car, we’re checking out all of the possibilities.”
Police had no motive and no suspects in the shooting late Sunday.
