Flagging Down a Profit: The imminent demise of the Soviet Union is creating demand for the least likely item: the revolutionary-red, hammer-and-sickle flag.
In the last few days, there has been an uptick in demand for Soviet flags at Flagtime U.S.A., a Laguna Beach flag retailer.
“It’s a collector’s item, and people see that they will be harder to find in the future,” said Danny Suguitan, a sales clerk.
At the United Nations Center in Santa Ana, by far the most popular items are desktop Soviet flags selling for just $2, said Frances Tschirgi, store manager.
