Council Members Blast Century Cable Rate Hike

Five members of the Los Angeles City Council led a parade of irate speakers who blasted a 14% Century Cable Television rate increase during a hearing Wednesday evening by the city’s Telecommunications Commission.
The rate hike, which went into effect Dec. 1, came just six months after Century Cable and other city franchisees successfully fought off a 10% entertainment tax. That enraged many speakers, who want Congress to give cities control over cable rates.
Century Cable officials said that an increase of the basic monthly service rate to $24.20 will help pay for $50 million in improvements to the system. The company serves about 113,000 subscribers on the Westside and in Sherman Oaks and Eagle Rock.
