Firsts: Los Alamitos’ Division III football championship Saturday was the school’s first in five tries, not four as reported last week. Assistant coach Frank Doretti, who has been at the school since it opened 25 years ago, noted that before defeating Esperanza, 8-0, Saturday, Los Alamitos had:
--lost to Paramount, 30-20, in 1988.
--lost to El Toro, 36-6, in 1987.
--lost to Villa Park, 21-6, in 1977.
--lost to Barstow, 33-14, in 1969.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Griffin Coach John Barnes shouted over the postgame hysteria at Cerritos College Saturday.
It also is believed to be the school’s first boys’ Southern Section championship.
The girls won gymnastics titles in 1984 and 1981, and a team tennis championship this past fall.
