Nation IN BRIEF : ILLINOIS : Cemeteries Strike Postpones Burials
- Share via
A labor dispute involving Chicago-area gravediggers has meant burials have been postponed indefinitely, drawing angry reactions from grieving families. Among 26 cemeteries affected are three Jewish graveyards, creating a hardship for orthodox Jews whose beliefs call for burial within 24 hours. The strike doesn’t affect 42 Catholic cemeteries, which have signed contracts with the union. Funeral directors said about 40 bodies awaited burial. The cemeteries association and the gravediggers are at odds over wages, benefits, overtime and probationary periods.
