Man Held for Trying to Run Down Officer

TORRANCE — A police officer fired at a Yorba Linda man Thursday as he allegedly tried to run the officer down outside a check-cashing business, police said.
Derrick Lamarr Mitchell, 24, of Yorba Linda was waiting in a stolen car at Anykind Check Cashing at 3025 Artesia Blvd., while Regina Janell Daily, 20, of Los Angeles was inside trying to cash a stolen check, police said.
As an officer approached him about 10:45 a.m., Mitchell sped toward the officer, slightly injuring him, Sgt. Jeff Burden said.
The officer fired once, shattering the left rear window. Mitchell was not hit, but his left arm was cut by flying glass, Burden said.
As Mitchell sped off, officers arrested Daily without incident, police said.
A tip from a witness led police to Mitchell about five minutes later, police said. He was arrested without incident.
