Group Offers to Exchange War Toys for Teddy Bears

Peace activist Jerry Rubin, alarmed that parents may be turning children’s bedrooms into barracks, said in Los Angeles on Thursday that the Alliance for Survival will again exchange war toys for teddy bears.
“War is not a game,” Rubin said in announcing the fourth year of the exchange program. “War toys are desensitizing children to the harsh realities of war.”
The Southern California Alliance for Survival’s Southern California chapter has traded more than 3,000 teddy bears for war-related toys since 1988, said Rubin, who is not related to the Chicago Seven defendant with the same name. “Parents are turning their children’s rooms into barracks,” Rubin complained.
War toys can be mailed to the Alliance for Survival offices. “Please include $1 for postage and handling, and a note explaining why you are exchanging the toy,” Rubin added. The teddy bears are donated by San Francisco-based Dakin Toys, Rubin said.
