Opera and Musicians Reach Accord for Show to Go On

A no-strike agreement through the run of the San Diego Opera’s “Der Rosenkavalier” was assured late Wednesday by opera management and the Musicians Assn. of San Diego, Local 325 of the American Federation of Musicians.
Heated discussions had threatened the Jan. 18 season opener since Monday, when the musicians and opera management nearly reached an impasse on a contract they have been negotiating since November.
Although there is no final contract, both sides expressed optimism that an agreement will come soon.
“The important news is ‘Rosenkavalier’ is safe, and I firmly belief that the season is safe,” a jubilant Ian D. Campbell, general director of the opera, said Wednesday night.
“It’s all systems go, we’re gonna knock ‘em dead.”
The pledge not to strike was given after the musicians were given written assurances that agreements reached thus far by both sides would hold as the season goes on, said Liza Hirsch DuBrul, a negotiator for the musicians.
Sets, costumes and lighting will be delivered today to the San Diego Civic Theatre, and orchestra rehearsals will begin today at the union offices.
