PREP NOTES : Ex-Savanna Wrestler Okada a Finalist at Olympic Judo Trials

Tony Okada of Stanton, a 1991 graduate of Savanna High School, is top-seeded in the 132-pound class for the U.S. Olympic Judo Trials Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Okada is among five finalists for the 132-pound championship. He must win two matches to clinch a berth on the team.

“I feel pretty good about my chances,” Okada said. “I’ve competed against the other four (finalists) and beat them the last time we met.”

Okada won the U.S. Olympic Festival championship last July at Los Angeles, and the U.S. Open title in November at Colorado Springs.

He also won two state wrestling titles while at Savanna, taking the 132-pound class as a junior and winning at 135 pounds last season. He planned to wrestle in college, but has postponed his plans a year to train for the Olympics.
