Many arsonists have specialties, but none as distinct as that of the palm tree pyromaniac. Beginning in 1989, he or she went on a two-year torching spree that left in its wake hundreds of charred trunks throughout the San Fernando Valley, and a very puzzled Los Angeles Fire Department. A copycat pyro was apprehended last year and convicted of six palm fires, but the original remains at large.
