Bank of Boston, Shawmut Halt Merger Talks: Shawmut National Corp. said it broke off merger talks with Bank of Boston Corp., ending months of negotiations that would have combined two troubled banks into the largest in New England. Analysts called it a further sign that problems in the New England banking sector are abating. But they said Bank of Boston and Shawmut are still vulnerable and could become the target of other takeover offers.
