A Fillmore infant who suffered second- and third-degree burns in a bedroom fire Thursday died later that night, authorities reported Friday.
Three-month-old Esmeralda de la Cruz, daughter of Ramon and Cruz de la Cruz, was flown to the burn center at UC Irvine Medical Center Thursday evening from a Ventura County hospital. She died at 9:46 p.m. from burns that covered more than 80% of her body, Orange County Coroner Cullen Ellingberg said.
The fire started in a bedroom wall socket and spread to her bed shortly after 1 p.m., Sheriff’s Deputy Jerry Peterson said. Arson investigators determined that faulty wiring caused the fire, Peterson said.
