29 Literacy Volunteers Graduate

Recent graduates of the Anaheim chapter of the Literacy Volunteers of America who will teach English as a second language are B.J. Dewald and Ann Zawila, Garden Grove; Doris Shrewsbury, Cypress; Marilyn Whittingham, Stanton; David Braunstein and Camille Collier, Fullerton, and Linda Lemayski and David Mauchlin, Orange.
The others, all from Anaheim, are Cathy Canada, Kerri Hicks, Paula Moon, Margaret Schultz, Betty Thede, P.J. Mayes, Betty Pettit, Mary Joan Gillon, Lisa Menya, Patti Schmidt, Evelyn Snyder, Connie Cortes, Marlene Cosley, Ed Francis and Peggy Francis.
Also, Nina Gamboa, Jennifer Knigge, Dorothy Nicholson, Betty Sweeney, Jonni Wilson and Ruth Wilson.
Yorba Linda resident Jeffrey R. Bigonger, a 1967 graduate of St. Joseph School in Placentia, was named a Distinguished Graduate by the National Catholic Federation Assn.
He was honored for promoting Catholic education through his involvement in school, community and volunteer activities.
The award was established a year ago to acknowledge achievements of Catholic elementary school graduates throughout the country.
Michelle Sweet, of Thomas Wilck Associates of Irvine, has been elected president of the Orange County chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Other officers are Holly Barnett, of Odetics in Anaheim, president-elect; Annie Herbert, of Nelson Communications in Costa Mesa, secretary, and Keri Gee Barnett, Central ROP, of Garden Grove, treasurer.
Peter Butler, of Ambuehl Elementary; Michael Hsu, Moulton Elementary; Lacy Telles, Niguel Hills Middle School, and Josephine Liu, Newhart Elementary, were named champions of the recent Capistrano Unified School District elementary school spelling bee.
Louis R. Hansen, a member of Elks lodges for 48 years and a member of Mission Viejo/Saddleback Valley Lodge 2444 for 17 years, was awarded a Life Membership during a recent “Old Timers Nite.”
Lodge member Norman P. Murray was honored for 35 years of service and Merle Basset Jr. for 30 years.
Anaheim residents Melissa Allen and Niosha Yeganeh, seniors at Cornelia Connelly School in Anaheim, have been selected as Spotlight on Youth award winners.
Presented by the Women’s Division of the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce, the awards recognize their community work.
Melissa was recognized for her work to heighten campus awareness of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse and providing transportation home on weekends to youths who have had too much to drink.
Niosha was selected for tutoring English and math at Walter Elementary School in Anaheim.
New officers of the Board of Directors of the Sand Dollar Guild of the Orange County Marine Institute are Bobbi Balderman, Dana Point, president; Peg Maynard, Monarch Beach, vice president; Sigrid Cummings, San Juan Capistrano, corresponding secretary; Veronica Martin, Dana Point, recording secretary, and Mary Angela Joseph, San Clemente, treasurer. /
Sunny Hills High School senior Steve De Neefe and sophomores Adam Carr, Ajay Patel, Eric Young and Henry Hsi combined to win first place in the recent Rancho Santiago College Math and Computer Problem Solving Contest.
Twenty Orange County schools competed, according to Beth Hillger, math and computer instructor. The five students shared equally in the $400 top prize cash award.
