Trail Tips

Don’t hike or bike alone.
Take water and food.
Pack extra clothing, even if only for a day. It can get cold in the afternoon, so a light rain jacket is advisable.
Wear lightweight boots or shoes with tread if you’re hiking.
Take a map and compass if you plan to go off trail or into unfamiliar areas.
Wear a broad-rimmed hat, especially if you sunburn easily or are bald.
Stay together. It is easy to get disoriented and lost, especially if you’re with children. Consider giving children whistles.
Stay out of hazardous-looking areas. Local mountains are famous for rocky, sliding slopes.
Allow plenty of time to come back. Depending on terrain, it may take as long or longer to return.
Know the location of the nearest sheriff’s or ranger station.
Know your physical capabilities. Don’t push yourself beyond what you can reasonably do.
