A Van Nuys man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of child abuse after his 6-week-old daughter was found with severe head injuries, Los Angeles police said.
Officers found Melissa Weir unconscious at her home Wednesday about 8:30 a.m., said Sgt. Joe Brazas. She was in critical condition on life-support systems Wednesday night at Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, said nursing supervisor Denise Henry.
Her father, Steward Weir, 37, was being held at Van Nuys Jail on suspicion of child abuse, Brazas said. The Department of Children’s Services took charge of Melissa’s three siblings, he said.
Police would not say how they were alerted to the incident, nor would they discuss other details of the case.
