Winnie Mandela Cleared on Sit-Down Charges

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Prosecutors have dropped charges against Winnie Mandela in connection with a spectacular sit-down protest led by the anti-apartheid activist, officials said Wednesday.
Mandela, wife of African National Congress President Nelson Mandela, and 300 supporters brought central Johannesburg to a standstill last May 22 by blocking a main street to demand the release of political prisoners. She had been charged with obstructing traffic and hindering police.
