Lucas: The Man and His Dream: A morsel for those hungering for Oscar news: The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced Saturday that producer George Lucas has been awarded the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. The special award for producers (named for the legendary MGM production chief) is given only in years in which the academy feels there is a deserving recipient--which amounts to 30 times in its 63-year history. Lucas’ “Star Wars” series and his Indiana Jones movies have ranked among the top box-office hits of all time. He’ll be honored during the Academy Awards at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on March 30; ABC will air the event live.
