NEW TOOL: The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is “very pleased” by last week’s state Supreme Court clearance for the use of genetic fingerprinting in criminal cases, says Undersheriff Raul Ramos. . . . In 1989, the county began analyzing deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in blood and tissue samples and a new DNA lab is under construction in Santa Ana. . . . So far, the lab says it has used DNA to make identifications in 50 cases. . . . Ramos says the “primary recipients of the benefits” of the court ruling will be crime victims spared the burden of testifying.
