San Gabriel : Redevelopment Disputed
The city’s redevelopment controversy resurfaced Tuesday when Councilman John Tapp, who had backed redevelopment, suggested a formal halt to the council’s role in the proposed plans.
“It may appear to be backpedaling. Maybe it is,” Tapp, who is up for reelection in April, said Tuesday after suggesting that the council bow out as the city’s redevelopment agency.
The move died without support after fellow Councilman Sabino Cici, a redevelopment foe, accused Tapp of “grandstanding before an election.”
The process stalled last fall after many residents, fearing redevelopment would mean the loss of their neighborhoods, voiced strong opposition.
Some of the opponents were then named to an advisory committee to study various revenue-producing strategies, including redevelopment, for the cash-strapped city.
Council member James Castaneda said Tuesday that the council should await the committee’s findings before taking action.
