Azusa : Day-Labor Site Sought

Negotiations with an Irwindale company to lease land for a city day-labor pickup center fell through last week, and a new site is being explored.
In a split decision, the City Council Tuesday instructed the city staff to begin negotiations with the owner of a parcel on the northeast corner of Arrow Highway and Azusa Avenue, in the unincorporated area south of the city.
Councilman Harry Stemrich proposed the site, saying he believed it could be leased for $600 a month. He suggested staffing the center with a secretary from a temporary agency and a bilingual Azusa resident for a two-month trial.
Councilman Stephen Alexander and Mayor Eugene Moses supported Stemrich’s plan. Councilmen Tony Naranjo and John Dangleis voted against it. Dangleis had previously voted against opening the center. Naranjo said it was too far from the city center.
