Gorky’s Asks Bankruptcy Shield, Will Remain Open

Gorky’s Cafe & Russian Brewery, a popular downtown Los Angeles restaurant whose customers range from performance artists to corporate attorneys, sought protection from its creditors Wednesday under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy code.
“The restaurant at 536 East 8th St. will remain open and continue to be a haven for artists, musicians and poets from around the city,” said owner Fred Powers.
Gorky’s restaurant in Hollywood closed in December, “and the downtown location was seriously threatened because of the recession,” Powers said.
