Kidnaping Thwarted

RIO DE JANEIRO — A gunman posing as a policeman tried to kidnap a United States consul in Rio de Janeiro, but a real detective passing by intervened and the diplomat escaped, O Globo newspaper reported Wednesday.
The U.S. Consulate in Rio confirmed that “an incident involving one of our consuls has occurred” and identified the diplomat as Jeffrey G. Peterson.
