DEC Cuts Personal Computer Prices: Digital Equipment Corp. slashed prices on its personal computers, matching Apple Computer Inc. and Dell Computer Corp. in the year’s first round of aggressive PC price cutting. Digital, better known as a maker of big computer systems, said it cut U.S. prices on its PCs and PC products by 5% to 35%. A company spokesman said Digital “turned up the heat” on its PC rivals three weeks ago by announcing a new catalogue that offered PC products at a 50% discount. “Apple and Dell cut prices in reaction to that. Now we’re responding to them,” the spokesman said.
