BUS TO THE TRAIN: A new bus route designed for rail commuters is doing brisk business. Route 382, which runs 17-seat vans, takes passengers from the Amtrak station in Irvine to South Coast Plaza, UC Irvine, Park Place and the Irvine Civic Center. It had under 500 passengers in September, its first month, but over a thousand in January. . . . “Commuters are willing to give up their cars if the alternatives are convenient,” says county transportation official John Catoe.
