Dozens of Candidates Begin Jockeying for Legislative Seats : Politics: Tuesday was the deadline for declaring an intention to run in the June 2 primary election. Nominating papers must be filed by March 6.

SOUTHEAST AREA — Four dozen Southeast-area residents, including several state legislators and City Council members, have indicated that they intend to run for the state Senate or Assembly in the June 2 primary.

Candidates for the legislative seats had until Tuesday to declare that they plan to run for office. They now have until March 6 to file the nominating papers for the primary.

Races for several legislative seats are expected to be wide open this year as a result of redistricting. When a panel of judges undertook the once-in-a-decade process of redrawing political boundaries, they penciled out the districts of several incumbents and created new districts that are up for grabs.

Two area state senators--Bill Greene (D-Los Angeles) and Cecil N. Green (D-Norwalk)--have decided to retire, leaving a vacuum that candidates are lining up to fill.

At the same time, some incumbents have found themselves sharing the same district.

Assemblymen Dave Elder and Richard Floyd, for example, plan to square off in the 55th Assembly District, which includes Compton and parts of Long Beach.

The filing deadline has been extended to Monday for Senate District 25 and Assembly Districts 50 and 58, which have no incumbent candidates.
