Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : ‘Protected Status’ Urged for Haitians

Former top attorneys of the Immigration and Naturalization Service urged Congress to approve “temporary protected status” for thousands of Haitian “boat people” until conditions in their homeland make it safe for them to return. The refugees need not be granted permanent asylum, the four former INS officials said. “It’s been done before” for refugees from Lebanon, El Salvador, Liberia, Iran, Kuwait and China, said David Crosland, one of the officials.
