The Cal State Northridge women’s swim team will attempt to defend its title in the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference championships today through Saturday at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.
The Matadors (7-4) defeated runner-up Nevada by 148 points last season. Nevada is undefeated this season.
Northridge’s Kathy Ruiz is the defending champion in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. Teammate Cecilia Henriksen, a transfer from Sweden, is a threat in the 100 and 200 butterfly events.
Eleven teams will compete, including UC San Diego, Northern Arizona, Air Force, UC Davis, Pepperdine, University of San Diego, UC Santa Cruz and Cal State Sacramento.
There are seven men’s teams competing: Northridge, UC San Diego, UC Davis, Alaska-Anchorage, Cal State Sacramento, UC Santa Cruz and defending champion Northern Arizona.
Northridge senior John Kunishima, the defending champion in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events, has been hampered by a shoulder injury but will compete. Morten Ibsen, a transfer from Denmark, currently holds the fastest times for Northridge in those events.
