Jeff Tarango, Spain’s Francisco Clavet and Martin Laurendeau of Canada ousted seeded players from the U.S. Pro Indoor tournament at Philadelphia, boosting to five the number of seeded players eliminated in the first two rounds.
Tarango defeated seventh-seeded Wayne Ferreira of South Africa, 6-3, 7-5; Clavet beat fifth-seeded Derrick Rostagno, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5), and Laurendeau upset No. 12 Horst Skoff of Austria, 6-3, 6-4.
“When I got ahead, I could not win a point,” said Rostagno, who is ranked 17th in the world. “I had no idea what I was doing.”
In other matches, 15th-seeded Stefano Pescosolido of Italy posted a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Arnaud Boetsch of Paris, and 10th-seeded Amos Mansdorf of Israel defeated Christo van Rensburg, 6-4, 6-3.
