Angela Carter; Wrote ‘Magic Toyshop,’ ‘Company of Wolves’

Angela Carter, 51, whose novels included “The Magic Toyshop,” “The Infernal Desire Machines of Dr. Hoffman” and “Wise Children.” Her short story “The Company of Wolves” was the basis for an Angela Lansbury film of the same name in 1984, and her second novel, “The Magic Toyshop,” published in 1967, was translated to film in 1986. After working as a journalist, her first novel, “Shadow Dance,” was published in 1966. Then came “The Magic Toyshop,” the story of three orphaned children sent to live with their sadistic uncle, followed by “Heroes and Villains” (1969), “Love” (1970), “The Infernal Desire Machines of Dr. Hoffman” (1972), “The Passion of New Eve” (1977), “Nights at the Circus” (1984) and “Wise Children” (1991).
