SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — A school bus carrying 62 high school students collided with a pickup truck on Ortega Highway on Saturday morning, but no one was seriously injured, California Highway Patrol officials said.
The bus--headed for San Bernardino on a Capistrano Unified School District outing--was about to get on Interstate 5 at 8 a.m. when the accident occurred.
The bus driver, Florina Griffith, 28, of Mission Viejo, struck the rear of the truck as it made a left turn from the freeway off-ramp, said CHP Officer Drew Hertsch.
None of the students on board were injured. But James Martin, 41, of Lake Elsinore was taken to Samaritan Medical Center-San Clemente after his truck flipped over several times and landed on its back, Hertsch said. He was treated and released at the hospital.
A camper shell attached to the truck “was completely demolished,” he said. “We used two tow trucks to remove it and the truck.”
Because the drivers involved disagree on who had the right of way at the time of the accident, the CHP is asking any witnesses to contact its San Juan Capistrano office at (714) 661-6215.
