Valencia outscored Buena Park, 10-4, in the last 4 minutes 45 seconds to score a 55-49 upset in the second round of the Southern Section Division II-A playoffs Tuesday night at Buena Park High.
Valencia advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals to play Ridgecrest Burroughs, a 66-65 winner over Mira Costa, at a site to be determined.
Buena Park (20-6), the Freeway league co-champs, made just nine of 21 free throws.
Valencia senior center Adolfo Gomez scored 19 points on eight-of-11 shooting from the field, making all four of his shots in the fourth quarter.
Senior forward Marc O’Brien scored 14 points, making six of 11 from the floor for Valencia (15-9).
Valencia senior forward Tony Draft made two free throws in the final 25 seconds to help seal the victory.
Draft made the front end of a one-and-one with 25 seconds left to give Valencia a 54-49 lead and made another front end with six left for the final margin.
Buena Park’s leading scorer, Angel Barrios, was held to nine points, making just three of 12 from the field. Gavin Molinar scored 11 points to lead the Coyotes.
