Maestro Previn, May We Introduce Mr. Gehry?
Managing Director Ernest Fleischmann worked very hard to convince people in Los Angeles that Andre Previn was unfit to be music director of the Philharmonic.
Whatever the two men’s personal differences, Fleischmann’s criticisms of Previn always seemed pretty half-baked, considering the maestro’s ongoing associations with the orchestras of Berlin, Vienna, London, Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston. And now we read that Previn is a regular guest of the fussiest orchestra of them all, the New York Philharmonic.
It seems clearer than ever that Fleischmann launched a smear campaign against Previn to rid himself of a seasoned pro who dared to question and even oppose his authority.
Be happy, Andre. The truth is that you’re too good for Los Angeles.
Hey, Esa-Pekka, it’s not too late to change your mind!
