TOO GOOD TO RESIST: The Angels’ new veep, Whitey Herzog, says he had no plans to come out of retirement after his years managing the St. Louis Cardinals. But Angels owner Gene Autry made him an offer he couldn’t refuse (Times Magazine). Herzog says that his financial adviser told him if he took Autry’s offer he’d be able to retire at 62 with $25,000 a month, after taxes. “I can’t ever spend that much money in my lifetime,” Herzog told the adviser, but signed anyway.
