LOS ANGELES : School Board to Lay Off All Driver’s Safety Teachers
- Share via
Facing state budget cuts that could eliminate funding for behind-the-wheel instruction, the Los Angeles Board of Education voted Monday to lay off all 17 of the district’s driver’s safety teachers for the 1992-93 school year.
At a special meeting, the board voted 6 to 0 to send final layoff notices this week to the instructors. But the board also instructed district officials to seek alternative sources of funding for the program, including forming partnerships with insurance companies and having students pay a fee for the training, said Irene Yamahara, the district’s assistant superintendent of personnel.
