To whom was President Bush’s speech at the Challenger Boys’ and Girls’ Club on South Vermont directed? To the children surrounding him on camera or to American voters? Were the children really avid participants in this event, or were they there as unwitting stage props? Was this the sign of a kinder, gentler America, or was it the 1992 version of flag factory campaigning? DAVID NELSON
