Labor Party Wins in Israel
The Labor Party’s upset victory is a welcome change for supporters of Israel, who have been disillusioned with the right-wing policies of the Likud bloc.
The significance of the election results is that the new government--once formed--will rearrange Israel’s national priorities. It will move the peace process forward and will try to be ahead of the field with new initiatives. It will work equally hard to restore strained U.S.-Israel relations. In addition, the fate of the new Soviet Jewish immigrants will likely improve because funds currently being invested in settlement activities in the West Bank will now be used to provide decent housing and jobs for the newcomers.
Labor’s triumph marks a new era of hope for the people of Israel.
