California’s Budget Crisis
Gov. Pete Wilson has certainly accomplished one thing with his ambush tactics on the budget (July 5): He’s suckered me into putting my son on the line.
My wife and I registered our son two weeks ago to start kindergarten in a public school in Santa Monica. We could have put him in a private school, had we started looking for one nine months or a year ago. But we much preferred to be part of a community school.
As it happens, our son was born on Sept. 8. The governor has suddenly asked that children born after Sept. 7 not be permitted to start classes. If he has his way, we’ve now got no school at all this year. Politically speaking, it’s not the kind of thing a parent tends to forget.
