A Placentia man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and felony drunk driving Sunday after his car suddenly swerved and hit a construction vehicle, ejecting both of his passengers and killing one, police said.
Romulo Humberto Herrera, 22, of Placentia was dead on arrival at UCI Medical Center in Orange, and Andres Merfin Ortiz-Gonzalez, 19, also of Placentia, was in serious condition with leg and arm injuries, Police Lt. Rex Stricklin said.
Police found the driver, Juan Carlos Gonzalez-Raumundo, 18, half an hour later near the scene of the accident.
Police said Gonzalez-Raumundo was driving on State College Boulevard at 4 a.m. when he swerved to the right and hit a scoop-shovel crane between Chapman and Commonwealth avenues. He was not injured.
“We don’t know for certain if the driver came back to the scene or if he was hiding,” Stricklin said.
