ALL ELVIS, ALL THE TIME: Elvis and U2 fans alike are going to do some double takes at U2 singer Bono’s downright bizarre version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” a last-minute inclusion on the soundtrack to “Honeymoon in Vegas,” the soon-to-be released romantic comedy starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicolas Cage and James Caan. While other artists--including Billy Joel, John Mellencamp, Amy Grant, Ricky Van Shelton, Travis Tritt and Dwight Yoakam--took pretty straight approaches to the collection of Presley songs, Bono sings in a strange falsetto, with snippets of actual Presley dialogue mixed underneath.
Fortunately, the Presley estate didn’t do too many double takes. Since the track uses Presley’s voice, the protective estate’s approval was needed. But Glen Brunman, head of Epic Records’ new Soundtrax label, says that the estate apparently recognized that the performance was a loving tribute and granted a license.
The album will be in stores on Aug. 8, while the movie is scheduled to open on Aug. 28.
