Regarding “Keeper of the Flame,” by Diane Haithman (July 5):
Haithman’s cover story about Al Nodal, general manager of the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, was a welcome relief to the puff pieces about movie icons that usually appear in Calendar.
She vividly portrayed the travails of an arts advocate with a tough assignment: to paddle madly upstream in search of artists who reflect the cultural diversity of our city without making too many enemies.
I commend Nodal and I commend Haithman for making his story shine. Some minds don’t take the day off on Sunday; I’d like to see more work like this in Calendar.
