Nation IN BRIEF : RHODE ISLAND : Officers Regain Control of Prison
- Share via
Correctional officers at a state prison in Cranston, R. I., regained control four hours after inmates took over an exercise yard. About 45 inmates, some armed with fire extinguishers and pieces of a picnic table, attacked guards during a recreation period, said George A. Vose Jr., state corrections director. About 35 inmates surrendered three hours into the standoff, and 10 others an hour later after tear gas was fired. At a news conference, Gov. Bruce G. Sundlun said the inmates apparently were upset that guards had forcibly returned an inmate to his cell in the prison’s maximum-security unit.
